From the Desk of
the President...
As I sat at ENA
by the Bay, I began to think about emergency nursing, education and
learning. Much like the continuum of care, we in emergency nursing
are challenged with the continuum of learning.
Learning is
defined by Wikipedia as the acquisition and development of
memories
and
behaviors,
including
skills,
knowledge,
understanding,
values,
and
wisdom.
It is the product of
experience
and the goal of
education.
There are many different types of learning and a multiple methods
for learning. In nursing, we are challenged to learn and place in to
memory large quantities of information. This is obtainable by
stimulating multiple parts of the brain. Learning occurs through
combinations of
hearing,
seeing,
smelling,
motor skills,
touch
sense, and
logical
thinking.
ENA serves to
facilitate the learning process. Whether through conferences,
specialized programs like TNCC, ENPC, CATN, GENE and Key Concepts in
Emergency Management or through formal education, ENA is there to
assist with learning.
Did you know
that the ENA Foundation provides scholarships for research in
addition to collegiate scholarships for RNs who are returning to
school to obtain their BSN, MSN or Ph. D? There are even
scholarships for EMS providers who wish to pursue nursing.
If formal
education is not for you, consider just challenging yourself to read
the Journal of Emergency Nursing and maybe showing your
professionalism by taking the CEN exam.
Whatever you
chose to do, life is learning, especially when you are an Emergency
Nurse. Be proud; continue to learn so that you can provide the best
quality care to your patients and maybe my family.
If I can help
you in your on-going learning, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Your colleague,
Nurse Mary Alice
